Chapter Eighteen

The ringing of his cell phone woke Logan the next day. As he stretched to snatch it off the nightstand, he grunted because Dawson’s body draped across his made it nearly impossible for him to reach it.

“I’ll get it,” Dawson murmured as he grabbed the phone then handed it to Logan.

“Hello?” Logan answered.

“Mr Shelton, this is Thomas Slavinski, Harold’s friend.”

The tremble in Thomas’ voice alerted Logan that what he had to say wasn’t going to be something Logan wanted to hear. He sat up straight, causing Dawson to roll off him with a soft protest. He rested his hand on Dawson’s shoulder in apology, then left it there, needing the connection between them.

Dawson must have sensed something because all he did was cover Logan’s hand with his and keep quiet.

“I remember you, Mr Slavinski. How can I help you?” He glanced over at the clock and read that it was eight in the morning. He and Dawson had been up half the night making love, celebrating the fact their mission had been successfully completed.

“I wanted to let you know that Harold passed away last night in his sleep.” A little sob came over the phone.

“Shit! It wasn’t because of our visit, was it? I mean we didn’t put too much strain on him or anything, did we?” Logan turned his fingers over, and entwined them with Dawson’s.

Thomas’ laugh was kind of watery, like he was fighting back tears. “It was because of your visit, but not in a bad way. For a long time, I’ve been thinking that Harold was just marking time. He clung to this life and world so tenaciously for some reason I couldn’t figure out, and he couldn’t explain to me. When you arrived to deliver that ring, and I saw the joy on his face, I realized what he’d been waiting for.”

Logan tightened his grip on Dawson’s hand, and his lover shifted closer to him. “The fulfillment of a promise and the answer to a dream,” he whispered.

“Right. I have a feeling that Harold knew Kenny had left something for him, and again somehow he knew that Kenny would find a way, even from the grave, to get it to him. You buying that car from Harold’s brother was an answer to both of their prayers, I believe.” Thomas took a deep breath. “The showing is this afternoon, and the memorial service will be tomorrow. Harold had everything planned, since he knew this was coming. He wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered into the sea from behind his house.”

Logan cleared his throat. “We’ll be there. Could you text me the address of the funeral home?”

“Certainly. I asked him once while he was making plans for his funeral why he didn’t want to be buried back in Longtree where Kenny’s grave was.” Thomas laughed softly. “He told me that it didn’t matter where he was buried because Kenny wasn’t there anymore. The minute Harold’s soul left his own body, he and Kenny would be reunited, and could spend all eternity together.
